By creating an account or using Chatter, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, don't use the app.
These are written in plain English. No tricks, no fine print. Just the rules.
Chatter is for Women Only
Chatter is exclusively for people who identify as women.
By creating an account, you confirm that you identify as a woman. Chatter is designed as a safe space for women to make friendships through voice.
Eligibility requirements:
- You must be 18 years or older (see age requirements below)
- You must identify as a woman
If you do not identify as a woman, you may not use Chatter. Accounts found to be in violation of this requirement will be permanently banned.
The Basics
You Must Be 18 or Older AND Identify as a Woman
Chatter is for adult women only. No exceptions.
By signing up, you certify that you are at least 18 years of age.
Important:
- Parental or guardian consent does NOT allow minors to use Chatter
- If you lie about your age, we'll permanently ban you
- We may ask for ID to verify your age at any time
- If we discover you're under 18, we'll delete your account and may report you to authorities
If you're not 18 yet, come back when you are.
Account Requirements
You Need
- To be 18 years or older
- To identify as a woman
- A valid phone number (to receive login codes)
- Accurate information (name, birthdate, location)
- One account per person (no multiple accounts)
You're Responsible For
- Keeping your phone secure (anyone with your phone can log in)
- Your account activity (if your friend uses your phone, it's still your account)
- Not sharing your account with others
What You Can't Do
Don't be a jerk. Specifically:
Zero Tolerance (Instant Permanent Ban)
- Sexual content - No pornography, nudity, or explicit sexual content (photos or voice)
- Minors - Anyone under 18 is prohibited
- Illegal activity - Drug sales, human trafficking, fraud, violence, terrorism
- Child safety - Any content involving minors in inappropriate contexts
- Impersonation - Pretending to be someone else or using fake photos
- Hate speech - Discrimination based on race, religion, gender, sexuality, disability, etc.
- Threats - Threatening violence, self-harm, or harm to others
- Harassment - Stalking, bullying, or persistent unwanted contact
Will Get You Warned, Then Banned
- Spam - Mass messaging, advertising, or promotional content
- Scams - Asking for money, selling products, financial schemes
- Offensive language - Excessive vulgar, abusive, or offensive speech
- Multiple accounts - One account per person, period
- Circumventing bans - Creating new accounts after being banned
- Sharing private info - Posting someone's personal information without consent (doxxing)
If you break these rules, we'll ban you. Serious violations get reported to police.
Voice Messages: Read This Carefully
Voice messages are NOT automatically moderated, screened, or checked before delivery.
What This Means
- We don't listen to voice messages
- We don't transcribe them
- We don't run them through AI filters
- You might receive offensive, inappropriate, or disturbing voice content
Your Responsibility
- You decide what you're comfortable hearing
- You block users who send inappropriate content immediately
- You report violations using the report button within 24 hours
- We review reported content manually and ban violators
Your duty to report harmful content:
If you receive voice messages containing:
- Threats of violence or self-harm
- Illegal activity (drug sales, trafficking, etc.)
- Content involving minors
You must report immediately. Failure to report serious violations may result in account suspension.
Why We Don't Pre-Screen Voice
Privacy and cost. Automatically checking every voice message would require transcribing everything you say, which is invasive and expensive.
By creating an account, you acknowledge:
- Voice messages are NOT moderated before delivery
- You may encounter offensive, inappropriate, or disturbing content
- You accept this risk and agree to use blocking/reporting features
- You will report serious violations immediately
If you're not comfortable with this, Chatter isn't the right app for you.
Photos: What We Check
Unlike voice, we DO check photos automatically.
All profile photos go through AI moderation (Sightengine, a third-party service) to detect sexual content or nudity, and inappropriate imagery.
By uploading a photo, you consent to:
- Your photo being sent to Sightengine for AI analysis
- Automated content detection
- Immediate deletion of your photo by Sightengine after analysis (not stored or used for AI training)
If your photo is flagged, it's rejected before upload. Try a different photo.
If our moderation system is temporarily down:
Your photo upload will fail. Wait 60 seconds and try again. We don't allow photos to bypass safety checks (fail-closed approach for safety).
User Reports and Automated Moderation
How to Report
Tap "Report" on any profile. Select a reason:
- Fake profile
- Offensive content
- Spam/advertising
- I know this person (we'll hide you from each other)
You can report up to 5 users per day (prevents abuse).
Automated Permanent Bans
When you receive 5 reports, your account is permanently banned.
What counts toward the 5-report threshold:
- Fake profile
- Offensive content
- Spam/advertising
What does NOT count:
- "I know this person" blocks (these only hide you from each other)
When a permanent ban is triggered:
- Your account is immediately and permanently disabled
- Your phone number is permanently banned (cannot create new accounts)
- All devices you've logged in from are permanently banned
- You will not be able to access Chatter again from those devices or phone number
Important: There are no temporary bans or warnings. Once you reach 5 reports, the ban is permanent and applies to your account, phone number, and all devices.
Manual Review
Our moderation team monitors all bans and may:
- Verify the ban was justified
- Investigate patterns of abuse
- Take additional action if serious violations are found (e.g., reporting to authorities)
We also track false reports. Users who abuse the reporting system to harass others may face permanent bans themselves.
Appeals
If you believe you were banned by mistake:
- Email us at support@chatterapp.co with subject line "Ban Appeal"
- Include your phone number (for verification) and explanation
- We'll review your appeal within 48 hours
- Our decision after appeal review is final
Bans are rarely overturned, but we do investigate every appeal.
Blocking Users
You can block anyone, anytime.
What blocking does:
- Hides you from them (they can't see your profile)
- Hides them from you (you won't see them in discovery)
- Deactivates all matches and conversations between you
- Is permanent until you manually unblock them
They won't be notified that you blocked them.
Voice Greetings and Invite Expiration
When you swipe right on someone, you send a voice greeting (10-30 seconds).
Voice greetings expire after 24 hours if not unlocked.
You'll receive notifications:
- 6 hours before expiration - Reminder to unlock if interested
- 2 hours before expiration - Final reminder
After 24 hours, the greeting disappears and the match opportunity is lost.
Invites and Expiration
Invite Tokens
- Free users: 3 tokens to start, +1 token every 12 hours when depleted
- Premium users: Unlimited invites (999 tokens)
- Each invite costs 1 token
Invite Expiration
All invites expire after 24 hours.
- If the recipient doesn't respond within 24 hours, the invite is automatically deleted
- You'll receive notifications at 6 hours and 2 hours before expiration
- Expired invites cannot be recovered
- No refunds for expired invites (free or paid tokens)
Subscriptions and Payments
Free Tier
- 3 invite tokens to start
- +1 invite token every 12 hours (when you run out)
- Unlimited received invites
- Unlimited messaging with matches
- All safety features (report, block)
Premium Tier ($3.99/week)
- Unlimited invites (999 tokens, effectively unlimited)
- No cooldown timers
- Auto-renews weekly via Apple In-App Purchase
Instant Unlock ($0.99)
- One-time purchase (not a subscription)
- Adds +1 invite token immediately
- Clears your cooldown timer
- Can buy multiple times
Refunds
Payments are processed by Apple. Refunds are managed by Apple.
We don't control refunds. Apple does.
To request a refund:
- Visit reportaproblem.apple.com
- Or: App Store app → Account → Purchase History → Report Problem
Refunds are at Apple's discretion, not ours.
Message Retention and Deletion
Voice messages are automatically deleted after 30 days.
- Messages older than 30 days are permanently deleted from our servers
- This applies to all messages (sent and received)
- You can manually delete messages anytime before the 30-day limit
- Deleted messages are retained for 30 days after deletion (for dispute resolution), then permanently deleted
Account Deletion
For Free Users
- Settings → Account → Delete Account
- Type "DELETE" to confirm
- All your data is immediately deleted (permanent and irreversible)
For Premium Subscribers
You must cancel your subscription BEFORE deleting your account.
- Go to Settings → Manage Subscription (opens Apple)
- Cancel your subscription
- Wait for current billing period to end (subscription expires)
- Return to Chatter → Settings → Account → Delete Account
If you try to delete while subscribed, you'll see an error message asking you to cancel first.
Why? To prevent billing issues and ensure you're not charged after deletion.
Rate Limiting and Abuse Prevention
To prevent spam, abuse, and excessive costs, we enforce rate limits on certain actions:
Hard Limits (Enforced, Cannot Exceed)
- SMS login codes: 5 per 5 minutes (per phone number)
- Profile photo uploads: 10 per day
- Voice bio uploads: 5 per day
- Message voice uploads: 30 per day
- Send invites: 10 per day (prevents token abuse)
- Profile discovery requests: 10 per minute
If you exceed these limits, you'll receive a 429 error with a retry timer. Wait for the timer to reset.
Soft Limit (Flagged for Review)
- Send messages: 150 per hour (allows normal use, flags excessive spam)
If you exceed this limit, your account is automatically flagged for review. Admins may warn or ban you if the behavior is abusive.
Why we do this:
- Prevent SMS bombing attacks (costs us $0.05 per SMS, could cost $1,200/day without limits)
- Prevent storage abuse (large voice file uploads)
- Prevent spam/harassment
- Protect database performance
If you legitimately need higher limits (e.g., you're a very active user), contact us at hi@chatterapp.co.
Governing Law & Disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of Australia (New South Wales).
Disputes will be resolved via binding arbitration under the rules of the Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration (ACICA) in Sydney, Australia.
The Bottom Line
Be respectful. Don't be a jerk. Follow the rules.
We built Chatter to help people make real friendships. If you use it that way, we'll get along great.
If you violate these terms, we'll ban you. If you're a serious threat to others, we'll report you to authorities.
